We just returned from the 2008 Wild Foods Festival in Hokitika on the west coast of New Zealand. It was a truly jolly time full of costumes, weird foods, and locally brewed beer. We left Christchurch on Friday morning and camped out Friday and Saturday night. The town probably has a population of ten thousand and the festival attracts roughly thirty thousand attendants...you can imagine the spectacle. The menu included Hu-Hu grubs (which apparently taste like peanut butter, but I wouldn't know), mountain oysters (testicles), fried crickets, and a few slightly more ordinary things like venison burgers and fresh local seafood.
There are some pictures posted. Enjoy!
