News Worthy

Sorry we haven't written for a while, but it's been a little busy. Andy has been meeting with his potential new mentor, Randy Grace. He is now going through the application process for the University of Canterbury's doctoral program. It's been a bit of a whirlwind operation as he is, once again, against a deadline. With any luck, though, he will be enrolled at UC in mid-July. We will know a lot more by the end of this week and will pass it on.

Things are looking GOOD! Keep up the good work - we're all pulling for you.

I looked around the Canterbury University website and I didn't see ANYTHING about their basketball team - what's up with that?

Alright father, I am going to let you in on some bad news...CU doesn't have an athletics program...Kiwis don't even play basketball. There is an interesting sport here called netball, it is like basketball without a backboard. You can't dribble or move with the ball, just pass. Only the women play...the national team is called the Silver Ferns and they just took 3rd in the netball world championship.

Hmmm - that IS bad news. On the other hand, a Silver Ferns tee shirt might be another candidate for the Send-a-Tee-Shirt-Home contest...

Denise is here, and we were just looking over the pictures. We don't understand what's up with the bunny. It looked like it was dead in some of the pictures. Is there some sort of anti-bunny sentiment floating around New Zealand? Also, what's up with the hand that's painted all over the city? I think that it may be a symbol for some sort of walking tour or something.

Yesterday, when I was mailing your birthday package at the post office, a man who was standing behind me in line told me that I had to go home and look up "haka dance" on Youtube. It's apparently a warrior dance done by the Maoris. I saw it, and it was pretty interesting. Have you seen people doing it at rugby games or netball games or any other kiwi sporting events that I've never heard of?

Wow Kelly, you HAVE been doing your Kiwi research. The Haka is the Maori dance that the All Blacks (the national rugby team) do before each game. This year is the rugby world championship, so everyone in New Zealand is all hyped up about the All Blacks.

The bunny is just in an exhibit at the art gallery. The one in the foyer does look dead, but I don't think it's any kind of anti-bunny sentiment. Rodents are looked down upon here because there aren't any indigenous rodents. Basically any rodent in New Zealand is a sign of extinct bird species.

The hands around town are just like graffiti, though we have heard that an artist did a animation/compilation of the hands from all over town looking like the hands were walking or dancing. It's neat to see them in the weirdest places.

Hello to Denise!
