Day to Day

What this blog needs is a little more of the mundane details that people can't be bothered to share with one another...except through blogging. We have gotten our week down to a pretty good routine, so I will share it with you.

During the week Holly works everyday, but gets off at 3 on Monday and 2 on Tuesday. She is off at 5 Wednesday and Thursday and at 6 on Friday. She comes home for lunch from 2-3 Tues - Fri.
Andy works at the lab on Monday from 9:30 until about 1:30 (though it is a 45 minute commute to campus). He has been working Tues - Thurs nights at the hotel, as well as Sunday from 6:30 am until 6:30pm. It is a funny schedule because I have to leave for work at the hotel 5 minutes before Holly gets home and I get home from the hotel just when she has to get up to get ready for work again. I wake up in the afternoon when she comes home for lunch. We get to spend an hour chatting, then I am off to work again.

We don't have much of a night life. Friday is the only night we can go out on the town since I have to be at work at 6:30 Sunday morning. There is a great little bar called Lyme two blocks away that has 2for1 Heineken and Bubbles on Friday night. Some of Holly's coworkers will usually accompany us there after work.

We've been cooking lots of good food and taking advantage of the local flavors. We just made a gourmet mac & cheese using local cheese from the Canterbury Cheesemongers which is conveniently located just across the street. On Sundays we usually go to the Christchurch Arts Center for their weekend art fair and its cheap and dependable food court.

The weeks have really been soaring by. On one hand it has been nice that the time has been going by so quickly because we are both essentially waiting for the next term to begin at the university, but on the other hand we are constantly in danger of letting some enriching New Zealand experience pass us by.

Now you have a much more complete picture of the routine of Holly and Andy...

Two things:

I was always told that the Hucks family's long-ago background in England was as cheese-mongers and that the name came from the term "hawk", as in "hawking your wares (cheese?) in the street". I have never visited a cheese-monger, but I'd like to...

What is "Bubbles"?

Now these are the details I am looking for. I was just wondering if the cheese shop has a bazookie player I hear they are quite lovely. I will most likely shoot you an email in the next week to give you the full dump of the blanchard family comings and goings. I'm glad to know that I am not the only one who see's my family in hour intervals.

Bubbles is what we call champagne. I think it's because only wine from the champagne region of France is truly called champagne.

The cheese-monger is a great place. They make cheese sandwiches at lunch time on their own fresh baked bread. They don't have a bazookie player, though I don't think I know what that is.

I just had a lab meeting with Randy Grace and Edmund Fantino and seven doctoral students. Fantino is the professor at UCSD that I would have applied to study with if I hadn't heard about Randy. They are two of the most highly regarded choice theorists in the world. What an opportunity!

Dang! I'm shocked that we didn't recognize such a clear Monty Python reference. Thanks for keeping us in line, Dan.
You should start a Blanchard family blog, y'know - then we all can share!
